Track Meet

I had no idea that all summer long, there were track meets for kids, put on by the YMCA nonetheless! Of course, out here in Caldwell, we hear nothing about these types of things. But in Boise, almost every week there were "open" track meets that kids as young as 3 could compete in. Thursday, July 11, all of the cousins were still in town, so we met them down in Boise and had a fun night racing with them. Each kid could compete in up to 3 events, plus the 4x100 relay.

Bryce decided he wanted to try long jump. Unfortunately, he scratched all 3 times so they never recorded his distance, but he had a good time and would like to do it again in the future. With some practice, he could do great!

Tyler was pretty excited just to be doing anything, so the first running race his cousin was doing too, he was there. Unfortunately for him, the first race was the 1500 (just shy of a mile). He's a bit out of shape endurance wise, and it was in the 90's so not a great combination. He started out pretty good on the first lap, but struggled the whole rest of the race. Each time he would come around and see me he'd cry. I just gave him water, a hug, and told him to keep going, he was more than capable of finishing the race. He finally settled down once he had more of an idea of how much further he needed to go, and though he was the last one to finish, he finished!

The 4x100 relay is open to kids ages 6 and up for anyone who wants to participate. They meet in the middle of the field and get put on teams. I think every Galloway cousin participated. We started out trying to take pictures and cheer for each, but there was too many of them all over the track! It was fun to watch them race, especially since some of the older ones were paired with the younger.

Lexi waited all night for her chance to race in the 50 yd dash. She and her cousin Claire were both running in the same 4 year old heat. Claire's had some experience with the race and came out and won it! Lexi was a little slower getting started, but picked up the pace as she ran, then didn't want to stop running! She ran right past me (I was cheering for her at the finish line) and wanted to keep running around the track. She was actually mad at me when I was calling her to stop and come back. She took 3rd, not bad for her first time!

The boys both ran the 100 yard dash. It was fun to see all 4 little 7 year olds racing together.

We stuck around until the end of the race to watch some of the other cousins run. It was a fun night, and I was so glad we got the chance to go down for it! Next summer I'll definitely keep my eyes open for more events like this!
